http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:DynamicPageList_%28third-party%29 would be very useful.

Other Possible Tweaks

Short URLs look nice, but they require a fair bit of fiddling--depends on how comfortable you are with such things. If it looks daunting, I wouldn't bother with it.
