Background

The Guthrie clan. Large, already, is ever changing. From Sam on down, each child has his or her own strength. However, this isn't about them... it's about Josh. Josh's early life isn't exceptionally special. When you're not the oldest or the youngest, you're an attention giver rather than receiver. That's Josh's story. It was always 'Help Sam with the kids' or 'Help your mom with the groceries.' None of that was bad, not at all, it was just boring to Josh. However, he did get one gift from his dad. The guitar.

The guitar was his escape from the mundane and it helped him with some of his jobs. It kept the kids quiet and gave him a little room for expression. When Sam went to work, Josh and his guitar were what kept the household flowing until Sam got home.

Then things changed. When Sam's powers awakened, the entire Guthrie household shifted. Sam became the local celebrity and the joy of the family. Josh was no longer in the spotlight as he had been. His skill overshadowed by what nature decided to give to one of the bunch. But that was alright. Sam went away to learn to control his abilities better and to help the world. Good for him. Josh, however, was left to fend for the family. Lucinda's pride wouldn't let them do other than everything they could.

Not cut out for the mines like Sam, Josh used his voice to earn money. He began playing at local gatherings and eateries. He earned enough in his own way to cover what they lost when Sam left, even though that was helped from other sources. It was obvious that Josh had something like Sam, but it didn't seem like much at the time. People just said he had the voice of an angel.

Most of those people didn't know how right they really were. Shortly after Sam left, Josh's voice came cracking and screeching it's way to pure pitch perfection. Not only that, but he had a range that no other human could match (as far as he knew). And... he could sing with more than one voice at once! He only used this with his family though, not wanting it to scare the people around him. The only problem was... with Sam's more obvious power, how was Josh supposed to admit he had anything worthy? He was overshadowed yet again. Middle Child Syndrome strikes again.

That didn't stop him, though. He kept going and pushing, learning what he could. He got to know some of Sam's friends when they came for visits to the family, including the one Sam was really close to, Knick. They were all good people, really, but they didn't KNOW the Guthrie's like Sam and Josh did.

After the most recent family visit from Sam, Josh stormed out angrily, but refused to say anything. It was simple jealousy that Sam got everything out of life. While he was out and alone, he went to visit the lake that he liked to go to as a child. Lying on his stomach and watching the water, his back began to hurt. It was sudden and severe... The voice of an angel was joined by the wings of one. Crimson feathers and full wingspan grew from his back within a matter of minutes, ripping through the shirt he was wearing.

Unfortunately, Josh didn't know what to do, so he stayed out the remainder of the night until he knew his family would be asleep. He crept in long enough to grab his guitar and some clothes and a few belts to keep things hidden... and left. He had to get out and find out what could be done.

Running away isn't easy for a teenager Josh's age. Especially when everyone for miles knows who you are. But during darkness, Josh flew to gain area, not realizing just how fast he COULD fly. After a little time, he finally decided to break down and call Sam's friend, Knick, to ask for help. He didn't like doing it, but he knew that he couldn't NOT ask for help. He had to turn off the Guthrie pride. But, he could ask one thing. He could ask that it be kept quiet for a bit. If Knick would help him, he'd take it, as long as he let Josh reveal himself to Sam when he was ready. Lucinda... she'd know when the decision was made.

From there, Josh began his journey to places he'd never been.
